About the show:
From Juxtapoz.com...
"The Encouraging Word is a new collection of original art, prints, and accessories with a positive message
created by Andrea Heimer. “I’ve long admired words,
text, and font (comes from being a former writer I
guess) so I thought I’d pay tribute to them in some
paintings and prints. And since we could all use some
kind words here and there, the messages in all my new
work are, well, encouraging!” says Heimer. Lord knows
just about everyone can use an encouraging word every
now and again, why not put it up on your wall to
really get the point across? They’re a helluva lot
cheaper than a shrink, too.

Featured Artist
Show Dates: February 2008
Artist: J. Erin Boyd / Red Boots Design
Medium: Screen Print
Artist Statement: Red Boots Design is Erin Boyd’s independently owned and operated venture in Bellingham, Washington. My first experiences with screen-printing took place at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. Ten years later it has continued here in B’ham in a basic shop shared with a friend and surrounded by the wheels of industry. In contrast, the print shop is 100% human powered, each print is pulled by hand, and as a result no two are exactly alike. I believe that sweatshop free, organic, thrifted and recycled clothes are a good thing and as a result I try to print on them whenever possible. Please enjoy these unique items found only outside the mall and crafted in a responsible and sustainable fashion. |

Show Dates: December 2007
Artist: Aaron Brick / Brickhouse Art Studio
Medium: Spray Paint / Collage / Graphic Design
Artist Statement:
Last year at the dawn of 2006 I began to explore the perplexities of stencils. I was never much of a painter, and really only doodled during class instead of paying attention. I had taken classes in painting, drawing, ceramics, collage, graphic design, and art history but something about stencils really attracted me. I was walking around the mean streets of Bellingham, Washington, where I preside, and ventured into a unique shop that had many artistic and political assets. One of which was a book called, "Stencil Pirates" by Josh MacPhee. It was love at first site.
It wasn't until a few months later that I decided to quit drinking and pursue what some might refer to as a "meaningful life". I used stencils as an escape from the drudgery of everyday life, and in all honesty, it was the most difficult yet productive period of my life thus far. From one stencil to the next they became easier to cut and I was enticed the way they made an impact on any surface I applied them to. Since then I've cut out over 100 different stencils and have had success in art shows, awards, flyers, and murals. When someone see's a peice of my art and it allows them to have an escape from everyday life, then I have done more that what I set out to do.
